What's in a name? How to come up with brand/ product names for start names

Updated: Nov 17

How important are names for start-ups?

Choosing a name for your startup or a product isn’t just about sounding cool – it’s about creating an emotional connection, sparking curiosity, and leaving a lasting impression. After all, your brand name is often the first thing people notice about you. So, how do you nail it?

Here’s a step-by-step guide to crafting the ideal name:

1. Tap into Emotions

Start by identifying the core emotions you want your brand to evoke. Is it trust? Excitement? Innovation? Jot down at least five emotions that align with your vision and values. Narrow it down to the top three that best reflect your brand's personality and mission.

2. Brainstorm Emotional Correspondence

Think beyond the usual! Look for names inspired by animals, places, objects, or even abstract ideas that resonate with your chosen emotions. For instance:

  • A name like “Falcon” could work if your brand represents strength.

  • For playfulness, something like “Bubble” might click.

Let creativity take the lead here!

3. Rate the Names Against Your Emotions

Take every name on your shortlist and give it a score based on how well it aligns with your emotional goals. Does it feel exciting? Memorable? Authentic? The higher the score, the closer you are to your perfect name.

4. Test with Friends

Shortlist 5–6 names from your list. Say all the names to your friends at once and ask them to repeat the ones they remember. Write down the top three names they recall. The most repeated name wins the game! This ensures your name is memorable and has a natural appeal.

Do the Radio Test (Not mandatory, this step can save you from future headaches!)

Say the chosen name out loud to your friends and family. If you have to spell your startup name every time or explain it, you might need to rethink it. A good name should be simple to pronounce and easy to remember.

Your startup’s name isn’t just a label – it’s the start of your story. So take your time, get creative, and make sure it’s a name that speaks volumes about who you are and what you stand for
